Dust collection and health

Post by bigKam »

Hi All,

In my spare time I have been reading about how to make my shop more safe and comfortable. The two major things on my list are electrical safety and dust collection. The former is because I've been collecting equipment and so wires are starting to crisscross my workspace, and the latter is obvious -- profiling wood and flashing skis produce fine particles, less than 5 microns in size, that can be hazardous to my health. For the electrical stuff, I consider proper grounding and 'bonding' to minimize being shocked. I've said this before, but the heater blankets can easily be punctured, exposing dangerously-high voltages. Though I always use a respirator when I profile and flash, what I've found it really important to have a good dust collection system to keep the particles from lingering and then inhaling them later. Anyway, there's a considerable amount of information on this topic in the wood-working forums. I also ran across this site that provides some insight: http://billpentz.com/woodworking/cyclone/index.cfm

Stay safe and happy ski building!

This website might be interesting for you:

It's in Dutch, but the text doesn't really make sense... :)

Building skis in my basement, my first major tool purchase was a half decent dust collector.
I bought the best one I could afford at the time. (1 hp w/2 micron bag)
While it works OK, I'm now looking at ways to get rid of the filter bag in favor of a decent pleated filter.
I wish I had bought a 2hp to move more air.
I still cut off the flash outside. ( with respirator and tyvek coveralls)
Just use it for wood cutting and planing.

I think G-man posted a link to the Bill Pentz pages quite a sometime ago.
Very good information!

Best of luck to you. (uneva)
