Hi,
As I am advancing in my first ski design and gathering the required materials, I have a few questions about three items:
- What should determine if edges go around the tip or not? If I choose for the latter is there any relation to where the edges should stop and rocker/camber?
- I am planning veneer as top layer. I am offered several thicknesses and among them 0.56 mm and 0.9 mm. I was thinking about 0.9 mm? Thoughts, suggestions?
- Regarding the core is there any theoretical aspect related to the width of the different section of wood I am going to glue together? Should the middle of the ski align to the middle of one section or on where two sections are glued?
Thanks

Re: About edges, veneer and core
Hi,
- Edges around the tip: Almost everyone here only partly wraps the edges around the tip, because bending them precisely around the tip is very difficult indeed.
- I would "stop" the edge quite close to the tip, before the real narrow bend around the tip would be.
- Veneer: thicker veneer adds weight. Thin veneer needs to be sanded more carefully after pressing - I twice sanded too much on 0,5mm veneer and the carbon below showed through.
- Regarding your question about the wood strips: In my opinion, it does not matter.

Re: About edges, veneer and core
Thanks for your reply.
Regarding the edges: one of my skis (brand Faction) has the edges around the tip but it looks like they cut the edge just before the narrow bend, leave a 1-2 mm section of base then include the section around the tip and finally another 1-2 mm section of base before the "other" side edge starts. Thoughts on this?

Re: About edges, veneer and core
Hi,
if you want an egde around the tip, it will be easier to make this way. As I said, bending a single edge around the tip is really hard. Usually, the edge twists a bit when its bent, meaning that the teeth of the edge are not "flat" with the tip,
As you are starting to build skis: just skip the tip egde and to a so called 3/4 wrap (though in reality, its more like a 9/10th wrao...). In your first builds there will be some flaws anyway, so do not try to overwork everything.

Re: About edges, veneer and core
Thanks. Yes I will go with the 3/4 solution. I am having the core and base template CNCed in the upcoming days and for the latter I will go with 3/4. I can always try what I suggested in a future iteration of the same ski.
