Re-sizing

Post by Richuk »

Hi all,

Would appreciate a bit of guidance with re-sizing.

I have a ski I'm happy with, but I need to think about making it suitable for heavier and taller riders.

I'm thinking ... proportional increase in width, length and distances marking out the flex pattern. Sound OK?

Not sure what to think about core thickness or turn radius. Does anyone have a general rule of thumb to offer?

Gut feel is an increase of 1 mm for core thickness will be about right ... not sure. I'm assuming I need to be thinking about a proportional increase in cross-section, but don't have the maths!

Hey Rich,

I don't have a formula to go by but I made 2 skis with the same dimensions, layup process, etc with the only major difference being the core thickness and core material.

The link below is for the quilted maple ski with a full ash core 3-12-3. This ski was stiff and plowed through all kinds of crud, carved beautifully. Need to lean on the front more than usual to carve.

This ski was the same but I made a different core. This ski was softer but not overly soft. Carved very nice. It's a ski I would make for a skier who skis primarily groomed trails, likes to carve a lot and mix it up. Definitely not an off piste ski. Good for anyone under 200lbs or so.

Hope this helps.
