Vellum

Post by skidesmond »

Anyone try using vellum paper ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vellum ) as a top sheet with graphics? I did a couple of experiments the other night w/ graphics on rice paper, vellum and plain white paper. The rice paper looked the most transparent out of the 3. I used poly as the "glue". I used poly just to see how it would look on each type of paper. The rice paper and plain paper stuck well. The vellum sticks but can peel off easily. It's turn almost as translucent ans the rice paper.

I should be laying up skis this week. I'll test a piece of vellum paper w/ graphics using epoxy and post results. I'm wondering if vellum would work as a top sheet also. It's thicker than paper and more durable and has a slight plastic feel to it.

Any luck with this? I've never worked with vellum before, but I know rice paper is widely used for graphics in the surf industry.

Would be interested in seeing some pics of your results.

I haven't tried it yet. I'll be laying up skis tonight and over the weekend. I'm going to run a test for transparency and durability. If it turns out to be fairly durable it could make for a top sheet, then I'll start shopping for rolls of it but.... we'll see what happens.

I'll post results.

I tried a layup chunk of vellum and a poly piece. No good IMO.

Hmmm. I was hoping it would work. Did you epoxy it? I didn't get to the layup tonight. Cut a pair of bases out, put edges on them, and futzed around a bit. Called it a night.

I agree. I did a layup today and it was no good. I was thinking of using it as a top sheet but it peels off. Might work ok for logos where you can epoxy or poly over it but, rice paper probably works better.

On to the next experiment!
