skinning cores

Post by knightsofnii »

i know most of you profile your cores with a planer mold or with router bridge. but i get that work done for me, sometimes it needs to be altered a little.

If you had a fully profiled core, how would you go about skinning say half a mm off the whole thing, or a section?

I was considering using a hand router and a wide bit sticking out just that tiny fraction from the base. But wondering if anyone has ever had to do this?

I know lots of guys just use the belt and take them down by hand that way, but i'd like to avoid this and try to come up with a way that produces more uniform results. Just wondering what to do incase my cores are over-designed, they feel a little stiff but i'm used to the over-flexy cores i got from somewhere else.

calipers, pencils, and sand paper. You'll be amazed at how quickly you can shave off .5mm. Don't sand in one place for long as the wood can heat up. You can also use a small block plane, but depending on your core taper and where you want to remove material, that might be a pain in the ass. I really find that a sanding block , calipers, and a straight edge is the way to go.

I would use a belt sander or a sanding block. Put both boards side by side and go over both boards equally. And as doughboyshredder says it doesn't take long to shave off .5mm

I usually do some level of sanding after using the planer, still need to tweak the planer crib

Go the router method. Start either end and work in to the centre leaving a high section about 70 mm wide an full width. ( center is thicker and less likley to self destruct from router stresses.) Remove the 70 mm bit with the belt sander. C .
