tube steel references

Post by vinman »

I am resumed research on trying to build a press. I just ran across this web site with lots of info on the strength of tube steel. and tube steel as compared to I beams.

http://www.steeltubeinstitute.org/hss_literature.htm

Now if someone with more math smarts than me decipher some of this I'm sure there is some good info in there. There is even a computer program that does some calculations but it only runs on older versions of windows.

What exactly are you looking to know?

It all comes down to bending stiffness, EI... I changes with cross section. Tube section has a higher I than an I-Beam.

Not sure exactly. I just thought that someone here might have use for this information during their own building process.

Just as you say square or rectangle tube is very stiff and much lighter than I beams. less expensive as well.

I'm considering using tube steel to construct a press frame like the one ON3P uses.
