Epoxy as a prototype base

Post by Whiteout »

I'm thinking of dipping my toe in this water by essentially profiling some plywood and/or veneers into some novelty shapes--fat approach, rockered skinny (today's standards)--putting on partial edges and not expecting more than 10 runs just to test them out. (Winning entry may get preserved, of course). I know wood slides. Does Epoxy slide at all? Anybody done this?

TIA

The problem is you will have a completely smooth surface. This causes "suction" as you slide on the snow, so you might actually get SERIOUSLY slow.

Also epoxy has no porosity, so you can't wax it (p-tex absorbs wax).

If you sand the epoxy to give it a stone-ground-like texture that you'd see on a p-tex base, that might slide better, but still won't take wax.

Thanks. I guess I'll try to lay up the core laminations (thinking two thin plywoods so I can build in some rocker/tip-bend/camber) keeping epoxy off the veneer-side-down as much as possible. Then sand off any epoxy that shows up there (inevitable) so at least those spots are not smooth. Then pine tar; then wax.
