chamfer router bit
Hey all
I am just wondering if anyone has suggestions of where to buy top bearing chamfer bits. It seems that every site has bottom bearing, but no top. Any help would be appreciated, thanks! (im in canada by the way)

Are you trying to put an angle on your sidewall? If you are, I would think you would be looking for a dovetail bit, not a chamfer bit. Either way, you can add a bearing and collar to the bit with the size that you need.
Another option is to use a fence with your router. If you do this, I suggest making the contact points of the fence as close as possible to minimize the effects of sidecut, especially if your design incorporates early taper.
I know some people have also used shims or a pivoting base laminate trimmer to achieve similar effects.
I also seem to remember a posting from someone who had some pictures of changing bearings on bits so with some searching it should come up.
Good luck. Hope this helped some with what you are trying to do.

I prefer angled sidewalls too. I grind the sides of the ski down square to the the steel edges with a flap-wheel sander. This grinding process results in a ski with vertical sidewalls all around, ready for the router process used to carve a bevel on the top edges as shown:

These skis have black reprocessed UHMW sidewalls. The bevel starts 6mm up from the base.
This router is mounted on a cantilevered aluminum plate. The ski is pushed beneath it, riding on a curved strip of MDF. The guide bearing mounted on the end of the router bit follows the metal ski edge.
The bit is a 22 degree bevel with a 1/2" shank like this one:

Good luck,

this is my first board, and I made a dumb mistake
I used the chamfer bit like you have there, but I just tried to run along the metal edge with the router running along hte top of the board, and ofcourse where the board gets thinner at the end, the router begins to run into the metal edge, so im stuck with a board that has half done sidewalls and just looking to finish it quickly because my time in the garage is up, and ill figure out a more permanent method for trimming sidewalls for next summer. ill figure something out...
