alternative bulk edge supplier to CDW
Does anyone know of any other edge suppliers than CDW? After a good initial meeting (actually face-to-face), I've had a difficult time lately getting any real information from them. I just received my order, which did not come with any invoice before shipment (they only ship COD) or with the order - and the price per edge, once I calculated it, was DOUBLE what I'd been told I'd pay over the phone (the only source of their prices!!). I understand why they don't really want to deal with smaller orders, but I thought that was why they set a minimum - it now seems to me they don't really want to deal with the minimum order, either.
Maybe I'm stupid for trusting a supplier on a verbal price.... but do I have any choice? Does anyone know of an alternate supplier for bulk straight or prebent edges in North America?
Thanks

dude i'm still searching for a supplier of ANYTHING AT ALL that can nail it for me...let alone edges. That sucks, i was getting ready to call them up too.
There always seems to be a catch, or a piece of the story missing, with any supplier.
I mean there's some, but they're few and far between.
Not long ago i was talking to someone about getting edges from a place in australia. I'll have to dig that up for you, but it might have just been another CDW distributor. I have a hunch they're the only ones doing it, other than the proprietary suppliers for the big guns, etc. Like K2 or Elan might make their own, not sure.

I have to say that I got great service and exactly what I wanted from the guys here at skibuilders.com when i placed an order back in the day. But when you want to buy from manufacturers for more than a handful of boards, it gets more difficult, when it SHOULD get easier from these suppliers. Its really a shame. I've been wishing i had more time to try to band everyone together so we could have more buying power etc. I actually started this little side project called the US Ski/Snowboard Builders Alliance but I dont have time to do anything with it. I was hoping to make issues like this less of a hassle for small guys like us.

I have the same terrible experience with CDW. They quoted me for significantly lower than they charged me. Also, they told me the shipment would arrive in April...it did not show up until NOVEMBER! And that was with ALOT of phone calls nagging them...every time with the same story: "oh ya, they are right here ready to ship out...just forgot to send it" (bullshit). Not to mention their "perfect fit" bending left alot to be desired, we are basically re-bending every one.
Well that sucks to hear. I was looking at ordering something like 5000 edges from them soon here.
Did you guys who got overcharged upon delivery call them up and say what the dded? Cause that is BS. Interesting in hearing if they made it right, or just sort of said dded off...
You can get metal edges from MD in europe, but you basically need to buy them in a spool, and that is just a bitch all around.

Waiting to reply until I (FINALLY) got the whole story on cost
So here's the deal:
I asked for the minimum order of shaped or prebent edges - the minimum for shaped is 50 pairs or skis worth of edges, while the minimum for prebent is 50 PIECES.
I asked for a quote and was told it would be around "4 or 5 bucks a pair for the straight (84"), and around 8 for a pair of prebents" (he also gave me exact numbers, but noted they vary based on material costs).
I ordered the straight pieces, as the minimum was lower and the cost seemed pretty good (plus, they need you to give them an actual template to do the bending, not just a CAD model - that sounded like a hassle on several fronts). So I placed the order, and he said they'd ship within three days. How do I pay? As I mentioned in my earlier post, COD only.
So three weeks later (so much for 'ship within 3 days,' they only had to go from Cleveland to Albany - though this isn't as bad as they did you, mattman!), they get here. Cost: $143.00 aka HUH? How many pieces did he throw in? Only the 50 pieces I ordered, it turned out, working out to $12 per pair of skis.
So based on the price I thought he gave me, that would work out to be like $7-8 shipping per 4 pieces. Or something was fishy. When I managed to get in touch with him, it turns out that when he had told me:
"4 or 5 bucks a pair for the straight (84"), and around 8 for a pair of prebents"
with straight he meant for a pair of TWO STRAIGHT PIECES while for prebents he meant PAIR OF SKIS. Actual price, from a new email:
"You received 50 straight pieces at $2.43 each
Freight was $20.88:
At least I finally got to see the prices written down. But would have been nice to know before - this strikes me as the kind of confusion invoices are meant to prevent. I tried buying direct to save money - if I'd known the real price right off, I would have ordered from skibuilders, the extra couple bucks per pair of skis would have been worth the hassle, easy.
I will say that when the guy at CDW realized I was frustrated, he was attentive and explained what they're doing, and said he'd make it right if need be.
I was confused by the fact that straight pieces cost more, at about $10 per pair of skis, than prebent, which cost $7.70 per pair. He explained that they were in the business of bending edges, and want to be able to add that value to a product without encouraging people to do it themselves. I'd always thought they were more of a supplier rather than an intermediary/service provider.
When I asked about price breaks at volume, I was told that at 300 pieces they have a 2.5% price break.
Mattman:
That really sucks you had to re-bend every one. I'd planned on making a bottom mold this summer for layup, I really don't look forward to getting a product that's not bent properly, whats the point. Anyone have any solutions to this, that don't involve re-bending all the pieces?
Doug:
I like your idea, it seems a lot of people here could make use of some buying power - I generally viewed that as what the guys running skibuilders.com were trying to get together with their store. The edges are the only thing I've had a tough time getting, though - fabric suppliers are plentiful, and I've had success with Crown Plastics for base material.
But still, there's always some room to optimize. I'd be interested in any ideas out there, especially for edges.
