Venturi Presses Anyone?

Post by nfaust »

I've been doing some lurking/researching on here and Graf for quite some time (and I'm getting closer and closer to actually starting this endeavour).

I haven't been able to figure out if a venturi-based vacuum system is right for me. I already have a pretty heavy duty shop compressor (150psi, 2hp, 26 gal, rated at: 8.6 cfm @ 40psi and 6.4 cfm @ 90 psi) and am looking at picking up either the V2 or V2 Premium kit from JoeTheWoodworker. (I can't post links as I believe this is my first post).

Anyone have any experience with these systems? Is it worth it/cheaper for me to go with the venturi setup? Or should I just find/buy/build a vacuum pump with another one of Joe's kits.

Appreciate the feedback.

Cheers,
Nick

I used some parts from joewoodworker and some from ebay to build a vacuum pump with a 5gal tank (his EVS style system). This works great to hold between 22 and 25" Hg for hours...and is off the vast majority of the time. I have used a venturi in the past, and I get that its tempting if you have a compressor already...but I dont think its worth it. Air compressors are already an incredibly inefficient way to transfer energy, and that only gets worse when you exhaust all the air out a nozzle to create a vacuum. This is why you need massive CFMs of compressed air to get a useful vacuum. If you compare the price of joe's premium venturi to a nice 3 to 5 cfm gast vacuum pump on ebay, the savings are minimal...and will be easily made up for with lower electricity costs. Shop around for deals on the components and its a pretty affordable project. My $.02

Thanks for your input, Matt. Looks like I'll most likely be going for an ebay pump + his EVS system. Look for some skis/boards from me in the coming months!
