I would like to buy a vacuum pump to start out building skis. Between not having a dedicated workspace here at school (yet, ;) ) , and not wanting to leave more projects laying around back home, I think a vacuum press is they way to go for now. I'm pretty much interested in anything right now, so let me know what you've got.

I came across this one a while ago...

At $80, it should be cheaper (and simpler) than the compressor/vacuum generator route, esp. if you don't have a compressor. Maybe.

Though it does say it only pulls -10psi as opposed to a maximum -14.7psi.

You should be able to get a few more psi doing something like this:

But you could use a refridgerator pump, which are <$80.

Thanks for the durplus link.

I've thought about going the fridge compressor route, but i'm not sure it's something I want to mess with. Many of the DIY plans don;t really specify how to go about removing the freon, and from what I know about it these gases can be extremly toxic.

I have noticed that a lot of these commercial vacuum pumps also run as compressors. I wonder how effective a compressor would be. I have a fresh air pump that I got from work, essentially a small compressor. I'm going to look into this more next week and see if this would draw enough vacuum.
