tele binding location questions?

Post by rockaukum »

Getting close. I have looked around to find how to locate the inserts for tele bindings. Best I come up with is the binding insert section of the build page. I need to clairify (in my mind) a few things:
1. Center lines, I got the one from tip to tail, the one across the ski says to align to the desired mounting location. Where is the standard mounting location.
2. Cord center is where in relation to the ski? Is it centered between the running length of the ski?
3. Is the template provided on the G3 web page accurate for mounting? I thought I read that it was not... If not, where can one find an actual/ reliable template (on the web?) I found one site referenced but it was a dead end.
Any further help will be great!
Thanks much rockaukum

A lot of this depends on which manufacturer you talk to. I can’t help with the G3 question or number one, but here is how 22designs (hammerheads) determine the CC.

1. For a ski that is a single tip (no/very little flip in the tail) measure the length from tip to tail and divide in half. Measure from the tip and mark.

2. If the ski is a twin tip then go to the tail of the ski. Measure from the end of the effective edge to the tip of the tail. Divide that in half and mark it. Then measure from the tip to the mark. Divide that in half. Measure from the tip and mark that as the CC for a twin tip.

I measured all of this on the pattern for the skis. Then I transferred that mark to the core, lined up the template and made the holes for the inserts. The Doods have a semi twin (modest tail flip), so I used the second method above to find the CC. The heavies have no tail flip, so I used the first method. So far the skis work great. I have found no reason to move the bindings from this location. I was thinking of moving everything forward a ½”-3/4” and adding two extra inserts so I could adjust the bindings back, but decided to use the recommended method for the first couple sets of skis.

In the past I used to find the balance point on the ski and line the pins for the bindings over that. It seemed to work well, but that was on a finished ski. I don’t think that would work to well on the core. As I recall the CC found this way was very close to the measured point. Back then I had not thought of measuring a % of area fore and aft of the mount location. I wanted to make sure the ski would balance on the toe and stay flat under me in any position.

That’s my $.02 Hope it helps.

Thanks for the replies! I have found a little time to search the internet and came up with these two sites. I will try all methods and mark the finish points to see how they compare. Read the "Optimal position" article and let me know what you guys think. Sounds good, but as allways, we benifit from those who have traveled the path before...

Hey rockaukum,

There have been a boatload of good discussions on this topic at telemarktips.com over the years. Over the last year in particular, there have been some pretty good one's. I get involved in them once in awhile, often stating some off-based perspective or asking some ire provoking question that inevitably gets someone upset with me. But, at the cost of looking like quite a Bozo at times, I've definitely learned a bunch from some of the discussions. Here are links to some of the more recent threads:

It's a pretty complex topic. A search on t-tips will yield tons more discussion.

I had a link filed away that had diagrams of hole templates for pretty much all of the popular bindings. I just clicked on it and it's now gone... bummer.
