I would like to draw under my snow by hand. For that I ordered a transparent base sheet. Except that I should have asked before ... can base sheets only be decorated by sublimation?
Is there a material on which I could draw that I could insert between the fiber and the base sheet? classic paper (crumbly) that might cause the structure to separate?
Is exposy painting the only solution?
Do you plan on doing a drawing over the full base, or just smaller parts of it?
PS: you can definitely paint on the base with the right kind of paint. Epoxy based screen printing inks are probably the way to go (a lot of snowboard manufacturers screen print their bases or at least backflood sublimated bases with white inks). Here's an old thread where the user falls documented some tests he ran: http://www.skibuilders.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=2581
I would like to draw on certain parts, but I would have preferred a colored background instead of the fiber showing through underneath. That's why I'm looking to see if I could insert a material between the base and the fiber to create a 'colored background' for my design.
Thanks for your reply and the linf to the thread !
For smaller areas that are away from the edged of a board, it is usually fine to just use water based acrylic colors (like Posca pens). However, if you plan on using color on a large area, i would definitely recommend using epoxy based inks/colors. What you could test is if it's possible to use water based acrylic colors for parts of the graphic and then backflood with epoxy inks. You would need to create a test piece like falls did and check if the colors react with each other (e.g. the epoxy ink might dissolve the acrylic color).
