The pictures are the best part

Post by Head Monkey »

They say a picture is worth a thousand words, and I've always felt that for this site that couldn't be more true. Often the pics are the most important part of our posts and journals. As has been noted recently, Photobucket is going away, so we're gonna have a bunch of broken image links scattered across the site.

But, perhaps surprisingly, that's only a drop in the bucket (pun intended) compared to the number of missing images already. If you're like me, then you have no idea which of your old posts have broken image links. To that end, I've done two things:

First, I've archived the site as of 2018/11/26. I have every post and referenced image, from all the sub-forums. At least I think I do... I need to check my results again and see if I've made any mistakes. (More on this later...)

And second, given the above, I have the ability to quickly generate a list of broken image links. Today I used the results for myself to go back and cleanup as many of the links in my old posts as possible, with pretty good results. (I admit I skipped the old For Sale posts.)

So, I've a list for everyone with a broken link. You can get to it here:

That spreadsheet has links to the topic which contains your broken image link, and the specific post, and the broken link itself. It's easy to click thru, look at your old post, and edit away. That is, if you have the images somewhere. (See my note in the Photobucket post for what I do.)

Here's what it looks like:

Image

And, finally, here's a list of everyone with a broken image link, and how many:

4,139 broken image links

Thanks a lot for this! All broken URLs from my posts appear to be links to third party websites, which I guess I can't do much about. Maybe I'll try to find similar images and re-upload them to some image hoster.

The problem is you can never rely that links will be working tomorrow. Only solution is to use a forum where upload of pictures is possible.

Its sad to see skibuilders forum going down more and more and people wandering to fb. Not that i dont like fb but for our use a forum is much more better then every fb group.

The Wayback Machine has been pretty hit-or-miss for me in terms of images, especially image links to other sites. But it is absolutely worth a shot if you can't find your old images! I did get a few from it when I was trying to fix-up my posts.

Reliable, stable image links are possible, see my post over here: http://www.skibuilders.com/phpBB2/viewt ... 1028#51028 To summarize, if you use a core storage service from Google, MS, or Amazon then you'll have storage and links you can control, and the odds of any of them going away are vastly smaller than any other sites going away. It's the best you can do aside from running (or renting) your own computer with your own domain.

It would, of course, be ideal if the forum supported image uploads. I get why the site owners might not want to do that: expense, being responsible for and policing bad content, etc.
