Untrue...

The 3 key components of a wood shop are planer, jointer, tablesaw.

If you make your own cores with rough cut lumber, a planer is a must.
If your a bamboo plywood or rich S4S lumber buyer, "might" not need it
didn't want to make this discussion in pointless argument.
I make my cores from rough sawn 4/4 lumber. Not quite like you but straight from small sawmill. All work done without using planer. my process is one set of cores at the time cutting and gluing

to OP if money is no object.... well you wouldn't be asking lol.
I think there is more important equipment then planner namely belt sander, high-quality tablesaw, bandsaw
All good MR, whatever works for the individual is the way to go. I have all those tools, which I bought with money from selling skis and boards that I build with none of them. Sky's the limit if your creative.

if you don't use plainer to profile core than plainer is not necessary at all. I have 12" portable plainer not using it anymore. all you need good tablesaw and router. Just set your profiling jig to 0° ....that's how I do it
Yeah MR that's how I did my last core. I have previously used a planer/thicknesser to trim a core down to 8mm, ready to sit on my profile router and it was heaps quicker and easier than using the router to do all the work, plus the planer gave it a nice flat surface to sit straight down on my vacuum table.

Thanks heaps to all the responses. If I can find a sander to suit at a price I then that will get scooped up. But they are rare over here.

Unfortunately it also looks like the guy selling the 15" thicknesser has snaked me and even after waiting 2 weeks for him to get back from a work trip and telling him I've got the trailer hooked up and will be around to buy it after work he sold it 2 hours before I could get there. He won't answer his phone now so I can't even get the chance to politely explain to him what sort of person I think he is.

If I hadnt just paid for my airfares and accommodation for next year's Japan trip this would be on the radar.

That one on ebay is even better but is a bit far for me to drive. There was a four head cnc router in Vic for $4000. Thought someone on here would have jumped on it.
