Yeah great thread. There arnt like 20 of these already.
It really depends on allot of factors.
16-18 gauge is standard.
No need to be a dick montucky. The thread you link to was last posted in 3 years ago.
FWIW I use 3.0mm aluminium so the base stays nice and flat

Doesn't mean you can't find it in the search.
Duh?

Still no need to flame people mate.
I was just reading some old threads and you were really friendly back then, now I just see you barking at people.
What happened?
I love it when someone gets their panties in a twist about someone not appearing to have searched. "Here's a leaky warehouse scattered with thousands of papers, surely you should have already read it all and found what you needed." Searching this site puts the following images in my head, in no particular order:
Morgan Freeman reading a tiny portion of John Doe's diary, and lamenting the effort it would take to even begin to digest it all:
Edward Norton reading from Jack's diaries in the house on Paper Street, surrounded by disorganized stacks of papers:
The warehouse at the end of Raiders of the Lost Ark (okay, that one was a gimme):
I'm impressed you found that old topic. I gave search on this a shot: 'Aluminum cassette thickness', 660 matches, nothing useful in the first many pages of results then I gave up. 'Aluminum thickness', 876 matches, same answer. Google 'aluminum thickness site:skibuilders.com', 58 matches with no good answer.
It is a worthy challenge for someone to bring real, useful, sustainable organization to the amazingly useful knowledge scattered throughout this site.

it probably should be noted that my molds are staggered mdf, so one on, one off etc.
If your molds are solid then you can get away with a thin sheet, if they are staggered then you should go thicker

Mine are staggered too. I place a sheet of 5mm hardboard on top of my molds, then the heat blanket and then the aluminum sheet.

How go you get the hardboard to conform to the mold chrismp? Glue? Screws? Or just press with heat and it takes on the shape?

No need to fix it to the mold, I just shove it into the press like I do with the cassette. It gets pressed into the mold by the firehose anyway. I have the same layers on top as well.
Topmold
firehose
cattrack
4mm rubbersheet (no more cattrackmarks in the tip and tail area)
2 layers of 3 mm hdf
2mm alu
ski/board
2mm alu
heatblanket
2layers of 3mm hdf
bottom mold
my alu sheets get bent during the first pressing and I would like to find something that returned to flat. maybe stainless steel or something?
we only make oneoffs and as long as the next one is the same lenght or shorter there is no problem but the other way around can be sometimes. Usually I can bend it back and reuse it but I don't like it.
Any suggestions?
