Wood for molds

Hi skibuilders,

Has anyone done their top and bottom molds of a
Wood that is not mdf?

I am planning to use ply wood for my next ones. Has anyone tried it already?

For the top mold I would say it doesn't really matters, mine is made out of 2x6's.
For the bottom mold though, from what I experienced, vertically laminated MDF is fine but when used horizontally it sucks : moisture and temperature impacts its thickness / flatness. When I have a vertically laminated mold I use MDF, When I have to use a sheet flat I go with plywood (between my 2 tip molds for example) Still have to check how it goes on the long run but for now it's fine... Maybe others can give their input too.

My top mold made of 2x 6 also. Plus spacers made of 2x4 when under pressure.

MDF can be saturated with epoxy. I thought maybe to make bottom mold from epoxy altogether.

My camber molds are made from wood (probably pine) glued together then machined to profile with the router bridge.
It's been working pretty good but I vacuum so not much pressure.

Plywood's a better option than mdf for moulds. much more dimensionally stable and robust but the downside is it's more expensive.
