The bases are two different colors of ptex, everything cutout using my $8 homemade drag knife on my CNC.
Care to elaborate on the drag knife? Pics?

bahahahaha, good one!

Sorry that that had to happen to you though.

That aint no honeycomb, that's vertically laminated cardboard!!!! That's what it looks like anyway.

Ha sorry Doug. I haven't been out in my shop in what seems like months... too busy skiing!

Tomorrow is looking like a nice day to spend a few hours cleaning the shop, so I'll get some pictures of the drag knife, and maybe cut some scrap ptex to take a little video.

It's pretty low-tech, but the results seem to be pretty good, and if I spent a little more time fine-tuning the "blade" it would be even better.

There ya go. I took a couple of pictures of mine last weekend, but haven't had a chance to upload them. But after seeing Brett's... I'm embarrassed to show mine. Mine is much rougher than that, but still works fine. If you spent the time to do a good job grinding, you can get a really nice sharp blade.

And if you screw it up, grind it down and try again, or just buy another one. For $8 it's hard to go wrong.

Put it in your check so only a minimum amount is sticking out (if it sticks out much, it will break). Leave the router off. That's all there is to it.

Twizz that base looks awesome. The fit is perfect. We put some details into the last pair of MORE skis but i love the look of the text across both skis. Might have to stop being so frugal on base material and go bigger on the next pair.

Hey Twizz, have you ever thought about just cutting the the end of a standard exacto knife and then putting it into the router chuck? McMaster-Carr even has a swivel head one...

or even one of these bad boys: http://www.riorondo.com/tools/carvingknife.html

Have a part number for the McMaster thing you're looking at? Sounds promising!

I like your idea about the exacto blade too... I've got tons of those blades laying around, just need to make some kind of custom chuck to hold it. Shouldn't be hard!

And in response to Less... the fit isn't "perfect". From 5 ft away it's perfect, and most of it actually is really good, but there are a couple of spots where there are some tiny gaps. It all filled with epoxy, but if you look close you can see the flaws. If I spent more time dialing in my tool paths I could have avoided that, but for my one-off operation, it's good enough.

I've been thinking about these

http://www.toolstoday.com/c-454-in-groo ... nives.aspx

A tad pricey but looks promising and cheaper then donek's setup.

Though I wonder if exacto's might not be able to take the forces of turning in the material?

Those aren't drag knives so will cut a V or other profile.
They are designed to spin so have no offset and would probably break if you tried to drag them.
Doneks or even an exacto knife modified to fit your router will cut without the v shape.
I'd be tempted to try modifying an exacto knife, would cost nothing but a bit of time and a square ft of base.

Just a thought

You don't even have a legit signature, nothing to reveal who you are and what you do...

Best of luck to you. (uneva)
