FS: Complete, self-contained, turn-key ski building workshop

Post by billl »

If you're considering turning your ski building hobby into a business, read on. We've gone through the multiple tooling iterations, countless prototypes and the many pains of going from garage-made to shelf-ready. We offer a turn-key solution for the person looking to avoid having to learn those lessons the hard way and rather, focus on building and selling top-quality skis. See the detailed ad below:

Complete, self contained, turn-key ski building workshop

This workshop is built inside a standard shipping container (40’x8’x8’). It is outfitted with an air exchange system for ventilation, and fully wired with 4 circuits of 120V power servicing three work stations. The work flow concept has been developed by a small scale ski manufacturer over 5 years to maximize efficiency of workflow and reduce potential for human error. It is designed for 1 to 4 people working simultaneously in preparation, layup and finishing work areas – working at full capacity, this shop could easily produce over 300 skis per year. It is outfitted with all the major ski building specific tools – edge attacher, base punch, press, base sander – and ready to build skis to your specifications.

Here's a video showing the workshop: http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xl03yh ... shop_sport

Description of ski building specific tools:
  • - Base punch – a 6”x12”x100” cavity, outfitted with pneumatic bladders and a 1.5” tall punching element. You will need to purchase a medium rule die to cut bases to your specifications (approx. $200). The punching bed has a nylon receiving surface to preserve sharpness on die blade. Normal operating pressure is 110 psi controlled from a central manifold.
  • - Press – a 18”x12”x100” cavity, outfitted with pneumatic bladders and a cat track for even pressure distribution. You will need to design and build moulds (upper and lower). Also comes with new silicone heating blankets and independent top and bottom PID heat controllers for accurate heat application. Normal operating pressure is 50 psi. Normal operating temperature is 80 C.
  • - Edge Attacher – a proprietary concept developed by the manufacturer for attaching edges to bases in an efficient, fool proof and repeatable way.
  • - Base Sander – Grindrite 2000. The unit does not have an auto-feed mechanism, just the basics. Unit comes with 2 80 grit belts, replacements are easily sourced. The unit has a new motor (<100 hours) and a new grinding platton for true results. The base sander can only process ski bases to a rough finish. A “snow ready” base tune and wax must be outsourced to a local ski shop who can add structure to the bases with a tuning stone.
Other tools included:
  • - 14” bandsaw for trimming flashing.
  • - Drill press outfitted with soft spindle sander.
  • - Compressor.
  • - Router table.
  • - Workshop Vacuum.
This listing also includes proprietary ski design software. Using the Solidworks CAD package, the software files that we have developed will allow you to design your skis, the components within them and all the shop tools (mould, press bed, edge attaching jigs, etc) to build them. This is like snoCAD on steroids :) Just plug in your specifications, and the software will output all the designs you need to build. You will need access to CNC/laser or water cutting capabilities (in house or third party) to have ski (sidewalls, tip spacers, cores) and tooling components (press beds, moulds) manufactured before pressing skis.

Here's a series of videos describing the software package:
CAD 1/4: Generic Ski Model: http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xl2tr9 ... odel_sport
CAD 2/4: Press Bed Model: http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xl2trv ... odel_sport
CAD 3/4: Press Mould Model: http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xl2ts5 ... odel_sport
CAD 4/4: Edger Tool Model: http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xl2tsd ... odel_sport

We are located in British Columbia but the workshop can easily be shipped anywhere in North America.

We would be happy to provide some training and technical support.

We will consider all offers and inquiries. We would prefer selling the whole package at once, but will consider splitting it and selling the components individually.

Thanks for reading! Please PM if you have any questions.

that grindrite is also known as the ST-600.

That's sick that they squeezed so much into a shipping container!! I've always wondered about ways of doing that

I know! Would be fun to pull up to Mammoth for a month. My st-600 has auto-feed.

The Steel rule die is pretty standard, however the cutting method is INGENIOUS! may not get the production of a roller press or clicker however its perfect for a smaller operation.

Great idea.

So is that a macro for solidworks or a file that can be modified to suit what ever specs you have and the shape is generated on all assembles?

Sell a tutorial or video on how to set up the solidworks file to generate those parts! Id buy that!

If I had the scratch Id also be interested in the whole set up.

FYI, the container is still for sale...

I've also added postings in the "commercial postings" section for individual pieces of equipment.

Any questions, please PM.
