I am gathering materials and info before I am building my first pair of skis.
Are binding inserts a must have? I am thinking of skipping them. I would appreciate so info on this from more experienced builders.

I don't use binding inserts. But a some people do.

I haven't bought skies in about 10 years but back then bindings were always screwed to the ski. no inserts.

I would consider it only if you plan on making a few pairs of skis and don't want to buy multiple pairs of bindings.

That way you can swap your bindings depending on which set of sticks you want to ride that day.

What he said. For my first few pairs I didn't do inserts, but now I always do. I hate having to take un-mount and plug skis, and don't like the idea of re-mounting and swiss cheesing the skis.

You could always use Binding Freedom inserts if you find you want to switch bindings but don't want to worry about keeping the inserts in the correct location during layup.

$115 for a set of plates? I'd almost rather just buy a set of bindings

Inserts are $1.15 EA. w/ qty discount @ 100 and 500. The plates make sense when you switch back and forth from alpine bindings to dynafit's. If not then inserts are probably the way to go.

BTW I have no affiliation to them but followed the development of their plates and inserts.

Binding mount position, fore and aft, is more of an art than a science.
If you put inserts in your first few pair of skis you'll end up not using them.
Unless your very lucky or are using demo or schizo binding that allow for some fore/aft movement.
My first few pair I've moved the bindings after skiing on them for a couple days.
Now when I build a new design I mount up demo bindings to figure out the sweet spot.
I can get pretty close with ball of foot on ski center but a centimeter either way makes a big difference.

Ease of installation. Durability.
Looks like an interesting product for somoene (ie. me) that doesn't have complete faith in the core not shifting slightly during pressing.

Yes. I have used these on 4 pair. They are every easy to install, comparatively to other inserts. Work great all season.

I guess these inserts are an after market product for the consumer rather than manufacturer. Also a major difference in the volume being sold between the two I'd imagine.
If you want the inserts like on skibuilders store you can contact camax tool directly and get them even a bit cheaper.
