Rocker/Camber Park Board

Hey all,

Been away for a while - had so much snowboard related work at the end of last year I got a bit sick of it all and needed a break. Back now, and going for a park board design this time. This is the current spec I'm working on:

Centred twin design, 153cm
3mm rocker in the centre from 10mm either side of the outer binding inserts
3mm camber from 10mm either side of the outer binding inserts leading in to the tip and tail, curving up in to the tip 25mm before the widest part of the board
6.5mm thick Paulownia & Tassie Oak core tapering down to 1.6mm
740gsm (22oz) triax above and below the core
2 strips of 1" Uni carbon through the camber section for added pop under the core

I'm going for a playful park board with a decent amount of pop, rather than a jib board. I'm thinking the carbon and camber combination leading in to the tip/tail section could give this, though I'm a tad concerned the carbon is too much stiffness and the glass weight is too heavy.

too much glass IMO

I use 17oz

22oz is heavy

1.6mm tip/tail will be way too soft i think...we have a board with such thin tips and if you step on the tip it just bends down right to the ground ;)

I have a bunch of tips that are 1.8 and they flex to the ground if pushed down. But, they still ride great. 1.6 is way too thin, I think.

On a 153 with rocker underfoot 6.5 may be a little on the stiff side. Especially with 22oz glass.

Welcome back alex.
I made a stiffer pair of skis where the core was 2.8mm and tip spacer 2mm. I added an extra layer of glass on top of the tip spacer to make up the difference. I think you had 1.6mm spacer? The other thing I found was that the 2mm spacer I have actually measures in at about 2.15 or 2.2mm.

I've got 1.6mm tip/tail in my current 157 all mountain board, it's fine with 22oz glass. The primary reason I was looking to use that is I've got material here left over, so reduces cost. Having said that, I'm working these days so the cost is far less of an issue than it was last year.

22oz glass IS heavy, but if you get the flex right by thinning up the core and tip/tail the overall product stays pretty light. My first effort is the lightest board I've ever ridden.

I was thinking 6.5 could be a bit much, my all mountain is 7 I believe and it's a tad on the stiff side. May back it off to a 5mm core.

Spent a good couple hours last night smashing out the CAD so should be ready to go soon.

woah.

Huge difference between 5 and 6.5.

.25 mm makes a big difference, all other parameters the same.

Really? That much?

Thanks for the input. Maybe I'll try 6mm, see how that goes. My first effort wasn't far off with the 157 all mountain, I want this park board to be pretty flexy but with some good stiffness through the tip/tail for pop.

The sidewalls are going to be Wandoo as well, much like my first board. Super dense wood, and I think that will add a bit of stiffness too.

I'm with doughboy on the change in flex from small thickness changes. I've been using the same profile crib the last 3 pairs. Everything the same in layup except core thickness. The 2.8mm tip skis are a lot stiffer than the 2.2mm tip versions.
