Help for a noob with kinds of ski press
Hey everyone i am considering making my own skiis but i definitley cannot afford a steel press. What are Glulam cloth and wood beam presses? How are they built? i am especially intersted in the cloth press because i most likeley will need to move the press around alot Which would be the cheapest one? Lightest? What is a good formula for figuring out whether a material will be strong enough? Sorry for asking all these questions but the search feature doesn't work very well. Also What is a cat track? What is an iggy style Press sory for the question overload? Any ninfo apreciated thanks SB
First off, have a think about using vacuum technology for your first few pairs (I've built more than 30 pairs this way). It can be almost free, just an old fridge motor, some plastic sheeting and duck tape. (cheapest, lightest by a long way)
Every type of pneumatic press requires a compressor (or a lot of work with a foot pump) and a bladder (normally fire-hose)
Glue-lam, Engineered wood beam and plain wood beam are ways of reducing the amount of steel in a otherwise conventional Pneumatic press.
A cloth press is a top and bottom mold held together with a cloth wrap - Plywood many others have been very successful using this variation of a pneumatic press.
A cat track is a system for spreading the pressure from your bladder across your skis / board not always necessary, depends on the design of your press, can be metal or wood, lots of variants have been used.
An iggy style press is a certain style of steel beam pneumatic press that iggy built, there are photos somewhere on his website (on3pskis.com)
A vary basic rule of thumb for pneumatic press would be is it strong enough to withstand pressure equivalent to several large cars! There are some good links to various engineering calculations for steel and other materials to do a proper job.
The search function does work, just takes some figuring out, or you can use google to specifically search this message board!
