top sheet in layup...

hi. thanks to everyone who has helped answer my other rookie questions. i have more...
im confused about topsheets and stuff. if iu want a natuaral finish ie you can see through to the cores, do i need a topsheet? can i just put the final layer of wetted out glass down, then directly on top, bleeder sheet and absorbent stuff and into the vaccuum bag? or do i still nbeed to put the topsheet on? i imagine when i pull it all out there will be marks on the top but i assumei can sand them back and perhaps paint on a varnish to clean it up...would this work? if i do need to add the top sheet, the stuff sold here, is it simply a case of putting it in bettween that final layer of glass and the bleeder material?
also, lets assume i have some graphics, on paper, that i want on my skis. if i want these on my skis, would it simply be a case of adding these pieces of paper after the final layer of glass and before the topsheet? is regular paper ok or should i photocopy it onto rice paper or any other stuff? i dont really want to get into screen printing these images, which i already have on paper, onto anything...
please shed some light on this strange mysterious topsheet process.
thanks!
