The Ski I want to Build

Post by Dave »

So, the boss/owner guy built a Ski Press, now I get to build some skis. Sweet

I've always wanted to ski the Big Daddies, but never got to. So why not build something similar? Here's what I had in mind. And a few questions.

Length: 190
Dimensions: 133-110-121
Camber: 10mm or so

Core Profile
Length (cm) / Thickness (mm)
15 (tip) / 2
67 / linear taper
16 / 11
CC / 11
24 / 11
60 / linear taper
8 (tail) / 2

Materials
Topsheet: 0.5mm UHMWPE
Metal: Titanal (?)
Composites: 22oz Triaxial Fiberglass
Core: Maple/Poplar (?)
Sidewall: 1/2 in ABS
Edge: Stainless
Base: 1.3mm UHMWPE
Rubber Strips (?)
Inserts: 7mm
Tip Spacers: ABS (2mm?)
Epoxy (?) Duratec 80LM-2A resin, 80LM-2B hardener

I'm planning on getting the plastic stuff from Durasurf, and other stuff from snowboardmaterials.com. Are there any better places? I live in Seattle if that's any help.

I'd like advice on any and all of this. Thanks.

And what does ABS stand for? That's been bothering me.

QCM Industries is in Kent, WA and make good epoxies. Tap Plastics (near Mercer st.) also has some some stuff like ABS. Fiberlay (SoDo) is also good for general fiberglassing and moldmaking materials.

Is this at ProSki?

ABS=acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene

Dave: nice to hear that Adam has a press. he came to watch Kelvin and i lay-up a pair of skis back in February, took some photos and talked about building the press. it's good that he's finally got it going. :D

we're excited for you guys. send us pics when you get a chance...

Hi dave, I had a spare moment and drew up your ski for you.

Here is the drawing in PDF format as well, in case you have no software available to view the DXF.

Depending on how my day goes, I may do up a 3D render for you as well :)
