Sketching problems (dang it)

Post by French-E »

What's up?

I'm designing skis on Solidworks out of a general sketch (twin tips) and I recently got back to doubting my sketches. I was ready to press (I built a press with my friend wich works since we press snowboards already) but I am rethinking my stuff one last time before making the core, the mold and everything.

My question is simple : Is my sketch any good? Do you see mistakes?

http://picasaweb.google.com/bobtherider ... 3949531314

It's just a basic design (you don't need to be expert to see that there is no dimensions lol) that I am using for Skis. My main worries are:

-position of turning radius center (Where does it belong? I know it must be iin front of the middle of the boot, and I know it is not in the right place on my sketch)
-connection of the turning radius to the tip/tail with arcs

Oh and by the way why the Core center on my K2 Silencers are not in the middle of my skis? Is there any relation between turning center and core center?

We didn't have such problem with snowboards because there are just total replicas of my friend's Nitro and the cores are from snowboard materials, but since I am a skier and not a snowboard pot head (lol, yeah that's for u Jeez) I want to make EVERYTHING and make it works.

Any comment, feel free to reply,

Cheers and have a nice day

I'm not sure if I totally understand your question regarding your design. At least for me, if everything is to scale, yes there are lots of problems. but I think I must have misunderstood, because it is clearly way too fat, for starters. also, if your riding silencers, I would guess your doing a lot of park (?) If you are, there wouldn't be a problem with mounting true centre. it also makes the design a lot easier (you could make a perfectly symmetrical ski). there is no such thing as core centre as far as I know. A number of people talk about 'core centre'... what they mean is cord centre. this name comes from how it is measured (search it on google). but there is no place where your centre 'belongs'. there is often a 'sweet spot' on skis, where it is best to mount your bindings, but you dont have to mount at this point. where you mount/place your sidecut centre is based on your riding style, but if you are riding switch a lot, I think you would really enjoy a medium flexing, perfectly symmetrical and centre mounted ski.

I would think that there is a dimension missing from what you call your running length to the widest point of the tip and tail. Normally the running surface length is the distance between where the tip and the tail begin to turn up. The length along the side of the ski is called the effective edge with usually goes from wide point to wide point.
Since this is a solidworks sketch the shape has is just set up so when the dimensions are applied it changes shape. The existing shape is not representitive of what the author is looking for.
