taco? by taco you mean twisted and bent in every direction?MontuckyMadman wrote:your posts are becoming rather confusing. .5 inch over 19CM? That's huge.
But the weight force is huge as a point load so.....
Just think about it man. If I start flinging around a big 'ole piece of angle and slamming it into things and trying to bend it the way the stress exists in a ski press, I'm going to succeed.
If I take a big ass piece of heavy gauge tube its gonna be a different story.
I'm lucky I have a college degree, so just use your head, all signs point to taco.

well
two things
the crossbar supports, i have found about 20 ft. of spring steel 1'' x 1.5'' for free
good for the cross barss ?
and i also have realised that i have alot, alot of black pipe. its piping around 1'' diameter. could i make a cat track out of this?
a circular cat track? would that work?

And woah, 19cm vs 190cm. Gotta be careful with your numbers, in the real world that can mean the difference between something safe, and something that kills people. Same thing with mixing up units, don't do that either

What do you mean by cross bars? Do you have a drawing, or even a rough sketch of what you're planning your press to look like when finished?
well. i mean cross bars.
you know in the ski builders video.
this one: http://www.skibuilders.com/howto/movies ... ntro01.wmv
well
when they inflate their press, they put on 3 square tubes and tighten them with a torque wrench.
thats what i mea crossbars.
btw: 69 ! POSTS! hahaha

this made my day.
oh
and a few things to my journal.
i got a conveyor to my planer.
new work table. and a vice
and im not doing any skibuilding over the weekend because i have to clean out and re-organize my garage.
and i stopped the order for the bandsaw. i dont see a need to buy it right now
ok so, little update.
cleaned my garage! no cav in there
looks alot bigger now. i dont like the space
and i got the chance to go to the steel scrap yard. they had the dimension of what i was looking for, just not the right material.
they had a regular steel. i want the 1'' x 1 1/2 '' in spring steel. too bad.
but they did have a few things worth buying.
they had a vice, super rusty and broken, but i bought it for ten bucks with a stand, so completely worth it.
it was broken because the vice jaw was not moving with the handle screw, and i openined it u and it was missing a spring pin. i put one in, works like new. the i sanded it and greased and cleaned it, works like new.
and i bought a steel work table for 15$, rusted too but better condition.
and i got a shop vac for all the tools. yay.

hose is finally shipped, after three weeks. and my dad is getting one of his guys at work to turn it into a bladder.
5'' diameter - 8'' layflat
heres the set up for the hose. all parts already bought.
air compressor - tube - three way valve with pressure dial - hose
- hose

That is the exact same planer we use, awesome. And $50 with a broken switch?! That is a smoking deal! (we paid full price
) It's definitely a cheap/small plastic planer, but for what it is, it works just fine.
Don't worry about the Cav being gone, trust us its for the best. The only thing the Cav was good for was a blast shield between you and your press
A clean/clutter-free shop is key to good work, so nice work there too.
Any updates on the press frame itself? Why do you need spring steel?

While this is true, I think you're trying to add strength in the wrong place. Spring steel will certainly be better for the cross bars, but the underlying issue of the angle iron is still there (I know I'm beating a dead horse over and over again). For that short of a length (the width of the press) normal steel should be just fine, there isn't a lot of bending load to take up laterally.a.badner wrote:spring steel is only for the cross sections. its a little bit more expensive. but it is more dense and more rigid than regular hot rolled steel.twizzstyle wrote:Why do you need spring steel?
