just dont get the all plastic (black with orange or red square pad grips) ones.
They break after using them once or twice.

Get the red and green metal ones from home depot. Red are a little weaker. Green are quite strong, and if you get the real big ones, those are good for just clamping down anything. For instance I use two of the big ones with the board upsidedown on a table to take the camber out of it, while routering the sidewalls.

We use mostly the green ones for tacking edges. We take the green rubber tips off and toss them because the glue likes to stick to them.

The best way to ensure you're not going to have gaps, is to make sure your base is cut with a perfectly smooth arc, any bobble while routering out base will make a tiny wave that you'll never be able to get the edge to butt up to no matter what clamps you use.
And if you have to sand off little chunks of base after cutting base out, this will round off the edge, and can create gaps, though sometimes they come out after finishing/grinding though.

But yea you want some serious clamp force for tacking edges, unless you seriously lucked out and the stars aligned and you got your edge bent perfect to your base. $20-30bucks beats a gap filled, lumpy base.
