equipment question

Hey guys
I'm from nz - just had a mint year skiing. Plenty of freshies.
Im having a gap year and dont have a job at the moment. Am living at home (free rent), so got some money saved to throw around to try and put together some skis!
Not into making any money out of this - just real keen for a challenge of making my own ride. Although i have a budget of a couple of thousand (flexable).
Any tips for someone that has no powertools in his garage and looking to set himself up. Is ebay/internet a good way to go?
Any help would be appeciated!
