Do you lay the vds on the edges dry or wet it out before applying?

VDS wet or dry?

Post by falls »

Just curious whether people lay their vds on wet or dry?

Wet but only with minimal coverage. And I scrape the edges down before laying the VDS on. Too much epoxy and it get squirted out of the layup.

I lay it up dry but I make sure I leave a small bead of epoxy over the edges beforehand (not too much as it would push the VDS out under pressure, as Vinman mentionnned)
I used to apply it wet but I just didn't feel this extra step was really needed. No delam problem so far..

I sit mine on the base which is covered in epoxy. not soaking wet, but not dry.
I also made one board with no vds by mistake and havent had a problem with it after 40 days of riding.

I stretch mine out on the wetted base then use my thumb and finger to squeegee any excess off and make sure the entire strip is sticky.
And yes too much epoxy on your edge causes it to float around during layup and squirt out during pressing.
Been using 3/8 wide strips so placement is crucial.

I usually wet out my lower glass layers on a separate table and lay the VDS on top of these after wetting out. Meanwhile I go and wet out the base and edges. Then return for the vds which has been turned over to cover both sides. Run the VDS through my fingers to remove excess and apply.
The last pair of skis I wet the base and edges out then layed it on dry. It saved me a fair amount of time (new epoxy with less working time!), but no real world results on bond as yet.

i drop it right into the middle of the saturated base.... squeege epoxy over it, lift it up, flip it and put it into position... i make sure its all got a good smooth layer of epoxy on it, on both sides.
The rubber is not porus at all, so it wont translate any epoxy thru it, it needs to be wet on both sides.

treat it like you would a thin layer of ptex in the middle layers of your board/ski.

just dont flame or sand it!!! LOL
