Width of core

Post by ace skis »

OK, so i have done a lot of research on this and and coming up with varied answers. This is my first pair of skis and im using Poplar for my core my dimensions are
length: 184
width: 108
tip tail: 140 136
My question is how thick to make my core i have already drawn up a few profiles on cad and the flat spot on top is 32cm long and 10.5mm in height and it goes down to 2 mm at tip. i have heard 10.5mm would be good for the height i have also heard with poplar this will not be high enough and i should go about 12.5mm and if i dont my ski will be a noodle. Any suggestions?

Core thickness has been discussed to death here.

Ski stiffness is very subjective and almost impossible to quantify.
If it was me I'd split the difference and make my cores 11.5mm.

It's trial and error but eventually you'll find what works for you.
There is no real formula. If 11.5 turns out too soft try 11.75 and so on until you get it.
Then start all over again when you throw in the CF or change glass suppliers. 8)

Sorry if this sounds vague but no one can answer your question exactly.

Edited to add; 136 is a lot of tail on a 108 waisted ski, are you copying an existing design or are these just #s from your head?
Might be a little hard to release at the end of a turn.
Most ski tails are <10mm narrower than the tip for a reason.
Just sayin'

Best of luck to you. (uneva)

Ya im using the tip and tail detentions of the line sfb but camber and early rise and all that is my own. thanks for your reply i was more wondering if any one had use poplar in a ski close to that as it is such a soft wood to see what they thought but i agree ill go with an 11.5 and i will probably take my tail down to 132
