Epoxy top-coat finishing

Post by o2bjedi »

Greetings! Just took a ski out of the press and it came out great! I have a veneer topsheet and in the layup I coated the top with resin to make sure of good bonding with the rest of the ski. When I took the ski out there were a few wrinkles on top from my plastic sheet. The finish looks great from even resin distribution in the veneer. I'm worried that if I lightly grind out the wrinkles the finish will be ruined?
In the past I sand through the resin down to the veneer so I can stain. The finish looks great though. Should I grind the wrinkles and lightly sand the top and apply a polyurethane? Will the poly improve the blemishes on top of the epoxy? Suggestions ?

Lightly sand out the wrinkles. You can apply poly over the epoxy and it will improve the appearance.

If you can use a hard sanding block and wet sand the epoxy flat. Build up a few coats of Poly, wet sand to 600 grit then buff with automotive compounds.
Should come out better than a new car finish.

Cool. I'll try the wet sanding with the poly and see what happens.

Thanks!

The hard part is going to be not sanding through the epoxy.
It's best to build enough epoxy so you're safe not to sand through.
