It is in powder form?
What way could that be layed up so that it gives the ski structure and stiffness?
I was expecting something more like a unidirectional layout or a tow.

So you can visualize the size: A single grain of talcum powder or your girlfriends face powder is = to or < 10 micron, but for our purpose we'll say it's a micron. A nanometer is 1/1000th of that size, so yeah...powder would be the way it looks, but powderierprospectsnow wrote:It is in powder form?

I don't see how it's of use in powder form. Some one has to make it into a sheet, I would think. There's plenty of vids on Youtube on how the nano tubes are made, but it looks like powder.

This water ski uses these carbon nanotubes supposedly to make the ski lighter. The way the water ski guys at the shop were perceiving it is that these ski have the nanotubes down the length of the ski and that makes a lighter snappier ski. I was surprised to see the nanotubes are in powder form. My question is the same. How is this used to make a better water ski and how can we work it into making nan(er)tube snowboards?

It's just not practical yet, IMO. The manufacturing methods for aligning single wall nano tubes into any useful material is tremendously expensive at this point (see "buckypaper). Carbon nanotubes are like "oil and water" in epoxy resins, and the very thought that adding them unaligned to a board in any mixture would add strength, or any serious benefit other than marketing BS just makes me smile...it's "MAGIC PRICE INCREASE DUST"!!! Aaaaahahahaha! Any material science engineers want to chime in here? <whispers> Just use carbon fiber.

Well, glass and P-Tex are on the way. Now I just need to make/find a mold to use to knock these out after I make the core. Which I'm still not certain on how to do.
The trick ski post was interesting. Though, I have no idea where to get the foam for something like that, and would like it to be more still than a trick ski is. Kind of half way between a trick ski and an intermediate slalom ski.
Could one use a painters plastic drop cloth or something of the like to form a rough vacuum bag? Just curious while I am looking around...

I saw a video a while back and connelly does an injection mold on their boards. Otherwise maybe it could be planed with a surfboard blank?
I don't know much about foam that is used, but fiberglass supply has some similar stuff for surfboards and boats
