Which bamboo for ski cores: strand, verticle or flat grain?

Post by hank »

My question is to anyone out there who has made skis out of bamboo or if you just happen to know the answer to this... I am going to be using solid stock panels but should I use strand bamboo, flat grain, or vertical grain?

Thanks

I used vertically laminated bamboo floor boards.

Calibamboo also has vertically laminated boards in a 6" width. You'll need to sand the finish off one side. 60 grit + belt sander = 5 minutes.

You can also buy a 4x8 sheet of untreated vertically laminated bamboo. A sheet will get you 4-5 pairs of skis. Avoid treated stuff if you can, its a bitch to sand the clearcoat off.

You want vertically laminated. Be careful because sometimes even vertically laminated stuff is cross laminated which wouldnt matter with flooring but for boards you dont want.
