MediPore Tape?

Post by kylehiroyasu »

Hey quick question/idea so, I've been using this medipore tape made by 3m(http://solutions.3m.com/wps/portal/3M/e ... 85P3RT67gl I really dont know if that link will work...its medipore by 3m) , in my skis to attach my tip spacers to my core just so the whole things does slip apart somehow when im moving the stuff into the press. so i figured i'd share that with you guys. It wets out to clear as far as i can see, and its a cloth that breathes pretty well instead of something like scotch tape or duct tape.

My next question was, since it seems to adhere pretty well to things could it possibly be used to attach the ski edges to the base material? It isn't crazy thick by any means, and it wets out easily, do you think it could be a potential filler for super gluing the edges to the base material for those of us who don't have our pre bent? I'm thinking i'll try and see if its plausible in the next couple weeks but thought I'd ask, see if this was a stupid idea.

Oh, and im kinda new to ski making, im only on pair two at this point. so take everything with a grain of salt i suppose!

Medipore tape

Looks like good stuff because it wets out well. Probably pretty expensive compared to superglue unless you are getting it on the sly from work? Don't know why you are looking for an alternative to supergluing edges on - it seems to be pretty widespread and effective.[/url]

no, i actually just found it in my house and realized it would work well in order to attach at the tip spacer material.

But uhm yeah I dunno, well for one thing, i just hate dealing with the super glue and clamps, esp since, with both pairs i've super glued edges and then realized i have gaps in between the edge and the base material, so i was kind of thinking it was a little less permanent than the glue but still work well.

Also curious on your thoughts, do you think it would create any properties similar to the vds rubber some of you guys are using? As i recall reading the rubber is used more to help adhere the edges with the ski, not dampening...correct? do you think this may potentially help lock in the edge?

VDS is mostly to create a shear layer from my understanding, so I doubt this stuff would work as a replacement.

Basically the rubber absorbs the shearing effect between the edges and the fibreglass, helping it all stay together, and also creates a seal so water cannot get in and rust the edges on the inside.

My 2c, it may not be that great for holding the edges on, the material would likely deform easily and during pressing could allow the edges to separate from the base.

Not a bad idea on the tip and tail spacers though.
