Hot melt glues

Post by vinman »

In talking with some industry folks, it seems some of them are using a hot melt glue to bond sidewall to core. There’s lots of different holt melt glue types. I’ve looked around a bit but can’t find any specifics on which product(s) would be good for binding UHMWPE to wood. The ones I’ve seen that sound like they could work are very expensive. But if it cuts hours off my production time it might be worth it over time. Does anyone have any info on specific hot melts that would work for this?

I have a request into 3m to see what they say.

Once I have seen a video of a guy hotglueing a longboardcore form woodstrips for vacuuminfusion. There was always a little gap between the strips so that the epoxy could flow in between. Maybe this is the way they do it in the industry? Just a few dots of hotglue, the rest is done by the epoxy?

Look at industrial veneer banding machines and the glue they use.
Like malamine desks that have a plastic edge bond to it.
Or just call j skis and ask him.
Hes in vermont right?
Jay leventhal?
Line guy?
Hes on the facetweets on the reg and responds.

Pretty sure if they hot melt sidewalls in place they use a very short open time glue that works with UHMW/ABS etc then, profile and lay up as usually.

There's a video someplace of a someone bonding sidewalls by running the core and sidewalks past a roller of sorts, my guess is this is a bulk hot melt or contact cement applicator. It coats both surfaces and the bond quickly.

If I could shape my core, attach sidewalls and profile within an hour or two instead of waiting a few hours for wood glue to dry....

Right now it takes most of a day to attach sidewalls to cores. I only have enough clamps to do one core at a time and it takes hours for the wood glue to cure to the point I can work with the cores again..

I'd love to cut that to an hour...

Pretty sure this is the video you're talking about: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=91wrk1BnmzI

The machine they use looks like a regular edge banding machine.

My buddy that used to work for burton told me they use a similar hot melt for sidewalls. So far no response from 3m as far as a sample goes. This can only be bought in bulk of 11 or 22 lbs and it’s pricey. I’ll try them again and see if I can get my hands on a stick or two.
