Core splitting

Post by Jdline »

So, i just made some ski cores.
It are my first ones and i’m looking for what materials to use.

I used scraps from my woodshop, yellowpine, padouck and ayous (the only real lught wheigt wood i can find here in belgium)

But the ayous is splitting on me!

One side is holding good, butt the other isnt.

I would try to get some glue into the crack and clamp it back together.

I'm troubled by the split. Ayous is a new wood to me, but it shouldnt be splitting like that. It's almost like a drying stress from green wood. You could try to fill in with glue but i'd be worried whatever caused it to crack in the first place. If you've got panel clamps or can re clamp, i'd get that into the table saw, do some surgery, and reglue.

It's OK to fill in gaps with glue (or don't and just let epoxy fill in). There are stories on here of big mfgrs back in the day stapling cores together and letting the epoxy fill in during layup.

I'd glue it up and proceed carefully as to not propagate the crack or cause more. once the fiberglass layers are sandwiching the core, and the core's absorbed some epoxy it'll be strong and you'll be good to go.
