Protecting sidewalls while profiling

Post by LumberJacked »

I know this has been posted before (probably several times) but I truly cannot find it:

Do you guys find that running a wood stringer outside of your plastic (UHMWPE whatever lol) sidewalls is effective for protecting them from being destroyed during profiling?

If so, how are you all attaching this outer stringer in a way that can be removed after profiling?

If not, what is a better way?

I've seen these pictures on the forum but they are suddenly elusive.

Also, I am using a planer which is probably relevant info.

Can anyone link me to the posts where this been discussed? I only bought enough sidewall for 1 pair right now and would rather not pay shipping again.

Thanks and happy Monday! Let it snow.

Glue it down with hotglue when going trough the planer, works like a charm.

If you want to glue a outside wood stringer you dont need to get it off. You leave it, laminate and cut it off when finished / when you are cutting the outline

I don't know why I felt like I was going to need to remove it before pressing!!

I'll probably hot glue AND have a stringer, because I am paranoid.

Thanks

I literally cut a trench in the core blank and inlay the sidewall material, then proceed from there. Here's a pic, and a link to my full core building process.

I know right! His website is directly responsible for me spending thousands of dollars on ski building. i owe him a beer at some point.
