Do something new

Come on you lot, its getting dull in here. Surely somebody is trying something different at the moment?
Where are all the new builders with the same dumb questions?
At least that was fun to see unfold.

I got 2 pintails on the go and ill post some pics next week but they aren't really that fascinating. Except mayybe the wierd sidecut profile, its a reverse taper sidecut that shortens in the tail to still end up normal taper. It's hard to explain haha.

I might over temp the top on one of them and spoon the base but I'm not sure yet, the shape probably doesn't suit that (short running length already)

Anybody try something and fail horribly? We've all done it, show us the result so we can all laugh. Maybe my weird sidecut will suck, I'll tell ya's in a couple of months
:D

When you get a chance I’d be interested in seeing a sketch or photo of this weird sidecut haha! And maybe your logic behind it!

I’m currently getting really close to my first build! Pneumonia has set me back a couple weeks but I have heat control, Cat track, bladder, and the top and bottom molds all finished up! Pretty much just need a bunch of aluminum sheets and materials!

Not sure why I feel obligated to end every sentence with “! . Haha

I’m in the design phase of a 5 point asymmetrical sidecut, rocker tip/tail similar to the K2 Marksman. I might have it ready to ski by New Years, but I have to get the last few customer pairs done first.

I failed badly again keeping my workshop clean ;)

The new builders failed badly getting registered here, i assume :/

Beside that, im doing new boards with new materials and resin, so the chances are high i can post something here soon 8)

Ok, a more useful post ;)

Playing around with topcoats right now. Problem ... i hate grinding and polishing. But its promising

I have just started on 2 new boards.. Need to get them finished as Christmas preasents for my boys! Aaaaah I need a Kick in the Bum to get into it.
At the same time I am building a new Sidecut jig so I can cut my Base and cores without needing a Template. (I don't have room / $$ for a CNC).

And now my question.
Does the base go on the bottom or the top?
And which end is the front?

Actually when I was ski instructor I had a couple of opportunities to go up to people and tell them politely.
"The curly bits go to the front!"

I'll post pictures of my jig when I get into it.

And Tom, that topcoat finnich looks awesome! What is it?

Yeah Tom that topcoat looks pretty sweet. What product is it, epoxy hotcoat?
You've got a couple of small fish eyes but nothing severe, so a pretty good result really. I hate topcoat fish eyes. They make a quick finish job take days.
Obviously you are already working hard to get everything clean before applying, considering how good the finish already looks.

That carbon looks a bit weird though, might just be the angle of the photo on the topcoat but it doesn't look properly pressed. Was it just a test, what press pressure?

Akiwi I got to finish my two Pintails before Christmas too.
And with work at the moment it leaves me with only two full weeks to get everything done including all the usual Christmas stuff.

Those skis sound pretty cool Vinman. I like doing magnatraction designs, its fun drawing it all up and the different ways to achieve the multiple pressure points.

LumberJacked, you sound pretty close to some tests. DOn't rush the end pieces mate, it's always to easy to rush at the end just to get something in the press, for sure just throw something together and have fun with it, but make sure you still stay patient with building all the tools and equipment.
Look forward to seeing how you go.
Have you got a journal going yet?
Even the process of building all the tools and molds etc is fun to see. Pkus people on here can give you heaps of advice to save you doing a lot of things twice.
Welcome to the addiction mate :)

The carbon is allright, its an old proto i use for my topcoat experiments, no problem to dded it up ;)

Pressed with 5-6 bar, i think its the picture angle.

The top ski is the topcoat after applying with a brush. I dont want to do it with the paintgun cause i have no painting wall for the moment. And flying topcoat particles can mess up your shop a lot ;)

The lower ski is a topcoat (from earlier trieouts) grinded up to 1200 for testing. I did it with the machine up to 400 and then a small handpolish with 1200. Had no other grids laying around.

Next step is a proper grinding with machine up to 2000 and then polish.I just want to try it out. Im thinking this is too much effort to put in a ski cause you will scratch it and every scratch will hurt on a beautiful board. For me the boards are for riding and not for show. But a little bit of show doesnt hurt as well ;)

Yes, its epoxy hotcoat. The way you do it on surfboards as well

Thanks for the advice. Yeah I'm really anxious to get something in the press... the snow is flying!

I don't have a journal yet but will start one sometime. Last fall I spending pretty much every single hour of free time on this forum reading everything I could... the addiction was already real before I had a single tool!

I'll have questions... don't you worry haha

Ahhhh nice almost fxxckup today....

Cleaned the base from a fresh board today with alcohol .... nice ... cleaned off superfast .... then i realized it was acetone :(

Well, seems the base has no damage

Here is a new question!

Is anybody beveling their sidewalls with a band-saw at the same time as flashing the ski?

My band saw has a tilting table. Seems like it would be pretty straightforward to follow the edge with ~10degree tilt.

Potential downside? Thoughts?

LJ i would try it but the blade drift like that might be too much.
I have found the tune shop(and all production skis) to prefer a slight flat/straight section of sidewall directly above the edge for proper edge tuning. This is achieved with the pattern bit router bearing riding just above and on the edge which needs to be flat. Just go look at a bunch of larger brands with a vert sidewall.

Montucky, I think you are right. I know what you mean about that lip. I that router bit is the way to go. thanks!
