powder board for good female snowboarder

Post by satch »

Hey y'all!

I'm planning to build a snowboard for my girlfriend. Unfortunately I'm not really firm regarding snowboard design. Would anyone be willing to share some infos, mybe even a complete shape and rocker line?

stats: 175cm, ~60kgs. foot size 9-9.5

regards,

pretty good idea. only problem: it's supposed to be a present and there's definately no chance steeling the board without her noticing it.

shape is not really a big problem. think i'd be able to copy the outline of one of the big brands. my biggest concern after reading for 2 hours about snowboard shapes and rocker is the core profile. any suggestions?

If its pure powder board you can always just keep it simple. Flat base with rocker forward of the front bindings.
Shorten the tail or swallow it, lengthen the nose and unless she is a powerful type rider keep the tail about a lower mid flex, it'll make the turns easier for her.

What about core thickness? 8mm too much? shoul i reduce the corethickness between the bindings?

60kg girl, 8mm is too thick IMO. I would make it 6mm from 200mm outside binding centre and then taper down to 2mm. Making it a bit thinner between the bindings adds to the flex a lot, profile it without first and have a flex, if you want more thin it between the bindings 0.5 to 1mm

Ok! Read looked trhough the sites of abunch of snowboard factorries and played around with my CAD program. This is what i came up with:

Image

Image

Length 1550
Shape 298 / 251 / 278
Radius 7.7m
stance 500 -600 mm
setback 25 mm

i'm not really sure about the tail height. might be a bit high.

any comments?

That nose lift is wrong for a powder board. You want long low rise rocker (think surfboard not snowboard)

my 2 cents if it is a board just for powder days, give it a continuous rocker. this will make it a lot fun for a lightweight rider because it will react without having to be pushed. It also gives you some leeway if it comes out a bit stiff. and like Gozaimas said more and longer nose lift

Yeah I think like goz said you want a longer rocker in the front. If she has a lot of powder riding experience she will love that board, if she is newer to powder then she will hate it.
That much taper can make a board dodgy on the groomers, longer rocker in the front can even it out a little so that effect isn't as bad.
You're pretty close to a capita charlie slasher, great board but the early ones were super stiff and could be a handful.

OK!
I'll go for a full rocker bottom. Shape s gonna stay the same.
core profile will be 2mm - 7mm - 2mm.
should i start increasing thickness right from the nose and tail or should i have flat parts there?

I feel like even 7mm is going to be a pinch stiff, at least between the feet. If your taper points are in the proper spots you might get good flex outside the feet.

Though I'm not yet in the business of making pow decks, and everyone has a different POV about what's stiff and soft, etc.

What glass are you going to use and are you planning on any carbon fiber?

For a womans powder board I would go for about 6.7mm thinning down to 6.3 between the bindings. And if you aren't using tip and tail spacers I'd thin the tips to about 1.2mm. It makes for a nice light board and the tips don't do a lot anyway. The nose needs a long gradual taper in thickness though, you want a bit of stiffness infront of the bindings so it can provide that lift in the deeper stuff.

I personally prefer flat to rocker or a hybrid S rocker for powder, it makes the board so much more fun to ride getting to and from the deep stuff, also gives some stability plus a lot more power in turns, but it isn't as easy when you want to be a bit lazier and just cruise through it, that's when you can't beat full rocker.
One thing with powder boards is you can get away with a bit more. A full rocker board can be a fair bit stiffer than you hoped for and will still ride great in deep snow, a bitch on hard stuff, but fun in powder :)
I would be concerned though about that much taper plus full rocker, film her offloads from the chair, you might get some good falls.
