I was thinking about making some skis with wood bases.
Why? Why not... old school goodness. Less Plastic.
My main concern is glide... I've found websites with info on how to use pine tar and glide wax etc. but I'm wondering how well it will work for downhill?
Anyone have experience with that?
I also talked to a guy who makes wood base snowboards... and he puts a layer of epoxy on the base and then waxes them like regular p-tex... so I might try that.
However, I remember reading on here maybe a couple years ago of someone who had done this and found a good way, but I couldn't find the post.
anyone remember who that was? or where that post is?
other thoughts on the matter?
Anyone ever made wood base skis?

Yea, I tried it. The skis looked great but didn't have much luck getting them to glide. After 2 shorts run the wax was gone. I tried hot waxing, pine tar (it smells real bad), pine tar and hot wax. Removing the pine tar is a real PITA. Don't bother using it. I never did try the epoxy.
I talked/emailed the guy at PowderJets, he used epoxy on the base. Maybe I'll give the epoxy a try for kicks. But epoxy seems like it's a maintenance hassle over time.

Oh I like this. This is so old schoolGoatBoySkis wrote:I also talked to a guy who makes wood base snowboards... and he puts a layer of epoxy on the base and then waxes them like regular p-tex... so I might try that.
In 1989 I build my first snowboard using just 3 layers of plywood. I used a clamp press and regular wood glue. We painted the whole thing with epoxy and it worked great. At that time we also had the old type of steel edges attached with screws. My first bindings were parts from a pair of roller skates and the shoes we used were moon boots...
Build it and let us know how it works!
Cheers!
