super light skis

Post by davide »

Yesterday I pressed my first full carbon skis: ash woodcore, 250g/m2 biaxial and 200g/m2 UD between the base and the core. No top layer.
They are 112-80-101, 175cm long at... 1000g each ski! As light as Goode or SkiTrab.
Actually they are a bit soft in torsion, so I will probably add 250 g/m2 biaxial sa top layer; it will be 100g more.

Way to go. 8)

And for the metricly challenged (like me) the fabrics are 7.4oz and 5.8oz.

Without biax above the core you move the neutral grain close to the carbon layer - virtually reducing the thickness of the core. I personally would recommend to create a carbon torsion box (above and below the core) with lighter carbon (e.g. 125g/m2) to gain stiffness without weight.

Yes, probably the simmectric sandwich construction is better, but I wanted to try to put all the reinforcement below the core for two reasons:
I was curious to see how it works.
A visible core is more beautiful than standard black carbon.

The core here is 3mm thick at tip and 11.4mm at the center.

The main save in weight comes from the carbon; then refining the construction still allows to save few grams.

I am thinking to put the biax only at tips and tails (on about 40/50cm) and leave the central part with the wood.
