artski's skibuilding project

Post by artski »

Hello skibuilders;
I'm finally getting close to laying up a pair of skis!!
I've been studying this awesome site for a while now and feel like I've gained enough knowledge to give it a go.
The amount of info here is incredible and I hope that I can contribute in some way by sharing my experiences.

Here are some pics, I hope.

Beautiful press, I wish mine was that nice :( I get so jealous of folks with i-beam presses!

On your tip inflation problem, you're on the right track. You want the hose to be just about flat when everything is in there, it shouldn't be inflating more than an inch or two at most. Just space your top molds down a bit before inflating and you should be good to go.

Thanks vinman, its coming along nicely but more to do for sure.

Thanks twizz for the suggestion, I'll add some more depth and hopefully that will take care of it.
As for the press, a skier buddy of mine owns a machine/blackiron shop and he had those I-beems in his yard. Sold them to me for 200 bucks! Also I work for a sheetmetal shop and so I got a good deal on the rest of the iron. Fabbed it in our shop with a very nice mig welder. Getting it home was a trip but we did it with no injurys.
I'm pretty envious of your band saw so don't feel too bad.[/img]

I'll trade you my bandsaw for your press!!! ;)

Also, do you have springs or some other means on your cat track cables to allow them to move around? It kinda looks like the end of the cattrack is pinned down by the hose and then trying to stretch the cable down. I might be looking into it too much though.

try puting a 4x2 with the corners well rounded over and sanded in between your top mold and the hose to try and get better fit in the tip area.

I also have a theory that having the hoses forced downwards by the top of the press rather than letting themcontinue to follow the upward curve they are forced into by the tip mold leads to poor fit in the tip. I think lower tip molds and a taller top mold is a good idea.

eg.

It's subtle but you can see in the top picture the hose continues on the R side upwards following the contour before it strikes the top of the press. In your picture it strikes the top of the press quickly and is forced downwards. I reckon this applies a force that tried to straighten the hose and brings it up and out of forcing good pressure into the tip shape.
My rambling thoughts anyway.

Press looks epic though.
If it were me I would take some of your shims from under your bottom mold and put them above your top mold. It look like this would mean you would haveto redo the plates suspending the top mold and maybe the springs which is a pain in the arse.
Don't wait up, I'm off to kill Summer....

Well I put some more 2 by material on top of the top mold and now the hose presses into the tip nice and tight. Thanks alot twizz for your thoughts on that. I'd show some pics but for some reason my computer will not recognize my camera tonight.

Some day I swear this computer is going to be smashed into a billion pieces out in a field somewhere ala office space.javascript:emoticon(':D')
I did get some cores profiled today, so I am getting closer.
More important though is that it snowed pretty hard today!!

Well, I laid up some skis sunday morning and then went skiing. Pulled them out of the press this morning and cleaned them up tonight. They have some probs but all in all I'm happy and I think they are skiable.
the layup;
4001 w/edges
22oz tri
all ash core 2-11.5-2 lineer taper.
22oz
clear topsheet
tip 130,mid 92, tail117
camber is 7mm
The tips feel a little soft, hard to say. I forgot to put the vds rubber in[is that a problem?]
I think the bases shifted a little leaveing the cores a little shy on one side, not terrible but annoying.

I'm wondering if I added some epoxy in those voids, and then finish like normal think that would work?

Yes that will work. I had the same problem with my first pair (and second...) I used 30min epoxy, available at hardware stores, to make the patch so I wouldn't have to mix up epoxy.

cool I'll try that. I'm not that concerned with looks on this ski, I just wanted a starting point for flex. My next one will have graphics and maybe some rocker. I think I have a solution for the base shift too. I'll post my findings after.

"Locator pins" are our most tried and true method that we use. Two dowels super glued to the core that go into two holes drilled in the core. You have to cut two small holes in the bottom layer of fiberglass, but it guarantees a perfect core/base alignment (especially critical if you do inserts). If your base warps and turns into a banana (like my first pair) you'll have the same issue though.

(I'm still drooling over your press...). Great job on your first pair!

Thanks man I do like the press, I can pump it up to 90 lbs and 0.0 deflection in the middle. 8) Here is a pic of the lay up and you can see that I had the two cores attached to each other in two places, and I had a piece of dowel under each of those spots to lock the cores in. I don't think the cores moved I think it was the bases.

I had the bases glued dn with some 3m spray glue but apparently not well enough.
Image

Once the core locators were on the dowels the cores could'nt move.
Here is the press with the skis under pressure.

I am an oberon fan but my favorite Bells is the best brown which has just become avail. for the winter. I've been drinking PBR for a loooooong time, its my drink for the sake of drinking beer. :D
If you can find the Bells consecrator dopplebock, that is a really good beer.
