Montucky Skis

Post by MontuckyMadman »

Well there is nothing going on on this board so I have to post something after checking in everyday to see nothing.

My friend wants to call his non existent ski company Saga Skis but its also a gay and lesbian ski club in the bay area so that may be out unless we want to cross the line.

All the skis are core profile 2mm-12mm-2mm poplar and maple or poplar and beech with triax above and below and in some cases some uni carbon for poppyness above and below.

Here are some crappy cell phone pics.

Nice skis. I'm partial to the wood veneer top sheets.

Yeah I saw that also a few weeks ago.

Since we live in a booming ski town and my skimaker friend wants to do custom one offs for the locals I suggested we capitalize on the popularity and uniqueness of the town name, something like bozeman boards.

He had me make up this logo last year which is funneh but not really cool for a buis. I think its a waste of money personally.

Saga clothing is everywhere here in Little Cottonwood. Bright blue and yellow all over the place. Lots of stickers plastered around too. My first thought when I saw this post was.....hmmm they're making skis now. Cool looking skis though!

Looks good MontuckyMadman.
What are you using to protect those beautiful topsheets? I have tried using epoxy with good success however with the effects of the sun on epoxy, i have been looking for other soultions. I tried a poly urathane which was fine but was difficult to do without leaving brush lines.
whats the secret?

well those are crappy cell phone pics. I do a skim coat of epoxy on top with the lay up just to saturate. Without a skim coat there were very small, what looked like dry patches.

I do a couple heavy coats of helmsman spar urethane with a 200 grit between and then a couple thin coats of poly. I found a light poly bleeds out the brush strokes.
My freind uses a semi gloss which is real smooth and wax over the top. Not a hot wax just a paste wax, dry and buff.

Either way works and produces a slightly different finish.

The bloodwood looks similar to the paduk we have used. The skis look sweet. Is bubinga pricey? We finish our veneer skis the same way you do.

NO pretty cheap really. There is some in the closeout sections on those veneer websites and if you call and tell them your dims and what you are doing they can hook it up. ~ $30 bucks shipped for one set off skis.

Time for some more crappy cell phone pics.

165's with rocker for my friends wife. Shes about 115 lbs, so, tiny.

the cores were an accident after over profiling. they were really thin but I think turned out well. the super sap is really stout when cured.
