Most important point to remember is that they have very good marketing. Nice project and really cheap in my opinion! Will you add more cross-members to the frame? I would do that and then close it top and bottom with an OSB sheet and you will get a rigid torsion box. I think kiteboards are pretty similar... here is a source in english: http://www.kiteforum.com/viewforum.php?f=107 Most people do vacuum bagging.
The process is a lot easier than building skis/snowboards.

And you're absolutely right, probably 50% of the time is spent just building tooling, gathering materials, and planning things. 5% is spent doing the layup. 35% is spent fixing your mistakes, questioning why you got into this, gasping at the amount of money you've spent, and crying in the corner. ....
