Re: In the press today - as Swiss as it gets :)

Hi, just saw your questions. I re-built that ski since. 1) I didnt use any glass 2) I only used 300g/m² uni flax on top (right below the wooden veneer) as bcomp states 3) 300g/m² triax carbon as before Result: Perfect! The single layer of flax on top is great, better dampening the very springy carbo...

Re: Festool vacuumpump

Hi, you could give it a try, the maximum vacuum is enough. What might be more of a problem is the little flow the pump has: only 2.7m³ per Hour. That means that your vacuum press really needs to be airtight, a little leakage anywhere would be a problem probably as the pump isnt able to "pull&qu...

Re: Methods to keep core/ base still during press.

Sounds sensible. Different positions on left/right side will only be important in skis, not in boards.

Re: Methods to keep core/ base still during press.

HI fred, I have been using this method for the last 5 pairs of Skis I built and it works fine. I am on a vacuum press however, but that shouldnt change much. I screwed the spare base parts to my wooden mould, never have any base movement this way. What to think about: as the tape is on the bottom of...

I build nearly only carbon skis (or carbon/flax mix now) and never had that issue - about 50% of the mold's camber is in the final ski. But I use a very slow curing resin to ensure even temperature when resin cures. Regarding your temperature thing: IMO the bottom should be heated more to get less c...

silicon is more than stretchy enough! Made my hollow tips with a silicone sheet, the silicone membrane moves around every uneventy easily.

AFAIK flax has great dampening properties, and I think dampening along the length of the ski is more important than torsional dampening, hence I use thin Uni flax and normal triax/biax carbon. I love riding the results!

IMO this only makes sense if you build a lot of different shapes, as building this mold will take a lot of time.

Hi, 1) you will never get the base perfectly flat with a belt grinder (only possible with a stone grinder), but you can achieve very good results nevertheless. 2) The more pressure you apply, the more uneven your base will get. So I am a supporter of little pressure. Of course some pressure is neede...

My 2 woods are ash and poplar - because I can get them easily. My standard core is poplar in the middle and 2 ash stringers next to the sidewalls. In my idea the stronger wood along the sidecut helps transferring the forces from the edges to the binding. Poplar helps keeping the weight down. In a ra...

That ski is great! The only thing I don't like: Its not immune to rocks, (As any other ski). Have a look yourself: http://www.spame.de/skibau/matterhorn12.JPG Caught a rock when riding Firn in the Arlberg region (Wow, this area is paradise!). You can already see my repair approach in this picture: I...
