Thanks everyone! Robo - Making the press was without a doubt the hardest and least fun part of this process. I don't think I would ever want to make more of them. Kam - I have one pair done and have ridden them a handful of times already. I hope to post about "ruby soho" soon. Kam - When m...

Harrison Empires

It’s been well over six month since I started on this ski building journey, and now it’s finally time to get some of this stuff down and recorded. To make this a little more fun you should open this link in another window and let it play in the background: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7z9bPrUark4 ...

Very funny that we came almost the same solution independently. I used the same tool but modified it a little differently. Rather than cutting a groove in one of the "pipe tracks" i used my grinder to put a better square on the surface connected to and perpendicular to the face with the nu...

Awesome press Kam. I think you got a fairly good deal on the steel since I spend more than that I my press is considerably smaller (I think using W16 beam increased the cost a lot). My steel also came from a yard and had a “nice patina” on it. I started to clean it up but after only a minute decided...

Winterstick did some pretty amazing stuff through the 80’s and 90’s. I grew up riding on one of their boards and it’s still going strong. (On a related note I had a chance to get a swallowtail from one of their investors for $180 new, I passed and I am still kicking myself). Chicago- I think if you ...

A lot of things went wrong when i was pressing my first skis. Luckily this is one thing that went very right. My sidewalls are ABS the I procured from a local plastics distributor. I would tend to think that it isn't very high grade since a 4'x8' sheet cost only $150 even with haircell treatment on ...

Thanks Kam-

I ended up just holding one core down till it stuck on it's own while working on the other core. Going forward I think I am going to try the "small nail" method.

I will second both thoughts by G-man. The "sourcing" part for me absolutely blew my time table.
My first thought on reading your post Kelvin was a hope that I could get really thin uhmwpe for top sheets. That would be an awesome addition.

Great work guys. One question: When you first put the core on the mold I noticed that it was suspended between the tip and tail molds, the camera then cuts our and when it comes back the core is securely fastened down. Was this just using the stickiness of the epoxy or was something else involved? T...

If you do take them to a kinko's make sure they have autocad at the store (mine doesn't). If they don't you can plot your design to a pdf and give it to them that way.

Camber

G-man From what you wrote it sounds like you are touring on your skis? I know the seasons been rough there in the sierra's (and Utah) but have you ever had your high camber skis in really dry, light untracked? I am asking because I have heard that it is possible to have a good powder ski with camber...

If you wanted to build another one of those ring roller based edge benders I would be happy to compensate you for you time. Bending edges is giving me trouble right now (getting them smooth) and that thing looks like $$$$.

When repairing skis a slow cure epoxy is almost always preferable to a quick set epoxy because it's more ductile. Does the speed with which heated epoxy cures limit it's ability to absorb flex? In other words is heat set really stronger or just a stronger initial bond.

Demo's are heavier and have a little more slop. The larger your feet the less you will be able to adjust but I still think with 30.5 you will have some room to move, it just depends on the model you get.
