Re: 3d Base questions

Keep in mind that hardly any ski service will be able to handle 3d bases properly. You definitely will need to search for someone capable handling this, as all machines are made to grind as flat as possible.

Great Picture! Where was it taken?

Re: Low Density Sidewalls

Hi,

check this: I use 3 thumbtacks glued to the base to keep the core in position during layup. the core then can't move more than about 0.2mm without getting resistance from the thumbtacks.

Re: Pre-treating paulownia or balsa core

Thanks for all the feedback, will go without pre-treating. Another question came up: How much extra resin did you put on the fabric to get a sufficient bond with the balsa? I calculated that a layer of fabric (one below core, one above) will take up 85g of resin. I would add 25g = 110g per layer to ...

Re: Low Density Sidewalls

Hi, my solution is to only have 2.5-3mm thick sidewalls. This adds little weight but offers nearly all benefits of a sidewall. The only possible issue is that on a hard impact on the edge, there is less sidewall to take that impact. But a hard impact with constant edge deformation always is a bad da...

Re: super light freetourer

I'd also be interested what UD you used in +- 17.5°. Surely carbon, but what weight? If you want it damper (though a bit heavier), there is some nice carbon/flax mix UD from bcomp: https://www.bcomp.ch/products/amplitex/.
I really like the feel of carbon and flax mix.

Re: super light freetourer

Wow, really nice! How long is your Ski? And what happened to your edges? :) Will you cut your climbing skins in the exact shape or leave them straight in the "uneven" part of the edges underfoot? I currently am on a similar project, though my ski will be a bit smaller. I also use Bcomp Cor...

Pre-treating TPU ski end?

Hello, when searching for TPU almost all results are for topsheets. Now, I bought some ski ends made from TPU: https://www.skibaumarkt.de/produkt/skiende-245-mm/ Skibaumarkt recommends Sanding them before laminating. I wonder if some treatment like flaming (used for ABS sidewalls) helps bonding when...

Re: Pre-treating paulownia or balsa core

I will be in for some Balsa lightweight touring skis within the next 3 weeks. I shared exactly the same idea. After poeple here did pre-seal, I will go for it, too and publish my findings. I have a very thin epoxy though, and the idea with the wood glue seems sensible, too. Did someone ever try seal...

Glad it worked. Have done it like this on the last 6 pairs of skis, never had an issue and found it always easy to handle.

Re: In the press today - as Swiss as it gets :)

Hi, I cant recall the exact numbers, but the last one I built is pretty much this way: 130-88-118 2.5mm - 14mm - 2.5mm; mix of Poplar and Ash 0.? Wood veneer 300g/m² Uni Flax 300g/m² Triax Carbon Wood Core 300g/m² triax Carbon Definitely more than stiff enough with this setup, but I like em rather s...

Re: In the press today - as Swiss as it gets :)

Hi,

yes, 300g/m² on top is superior to the 120g/m² on top and bottom. also way easier to work with. The 120g/m² is a PITA to lay up, the thicker one is much better to handle.
