Re: WRONG 2017

Hey guys, I just got given a roll of chopped strand glass because nobody else wanted it. Before I hand it on to whoever wants it I'm just wondering if anybody here has actually used chopped strand in a board before and how did it go?
Layed up with some light uni it might be an interesting result.

Re: First core design ever

Is there a reason you are looking to weaken the core substantially at the point of highest load? I dont see those inserts staying put in that cork for very long. Its a great looking image, difficult to achieve without a cnc and most of it looks more like wank factor to me. Keep it simple at the begi...

Chris, I'll get the specs when I get home from work on Monday. They are both mid-wide boards. Nothing crazy but a little extra float. Heaps of rocker in the nose and a short running length, I think the bigger one is still only a 900mm running length. The sidecut is fairly progressive and the width a...

One is a 160cm board the other is only a 154cm. The shorter one is also a fair bit narrower, this is why the veneers look a little different around the edges, it's just the board dimensions.

Finished off a couple of surf inspired Pintails. They both killed it in Japan last month. They are fairly soft flex compared to most boards I build for myself but it was fun to try something different. I kept a decent amount of torsional flex so that at least allowed a bit of grunt into the edges. I...

What type of superglue are you using?
I use Loctite 406 and never have any issues.
It is a bit pricey but lasts forever in the fridge and has crazy strong hold.

Those skis sound pretty cool Vinman. I like doing magnatraction designs, its fun drawing it all up and the different ways to achieve the multiple pressure points. LumberJacked, you sound pretty close to some tests. DOn't rush the end pieces mate, it's always to easy to rush at the end just to get so...

Yeah Tom that topcoat looks pretty sweet. What product is it, epoxy hotcoat? You've got a couple of small fish eyes but nothing severe, so a pretty good result really. I hate topcoat fish eyes. They make a quick finish job take days. Obviously you are already working hard to get everything clean bef...

Do something new

Come on you lot, its getting dull in here. Surely somebody is trying something different at the moment? Where are all the new builders with the same dumb questions? At least that was fun to see unfold. I got 2 pintails on the go and ill post some pics next week but they aren't really that fascinatin...

2780grams is still a light board. Did it come out quite flexible though? Did you seal the core beforehand to try to stop the paulownia soaking up a heap of resin? I usually like a board for myself to be about 2900 grams so it still rides solid. Surprised you dont use a lot of red cedar as it must be...

Yeah the best way to learn is to keep stuffing up.
You should be able to break the glue and do the edges properly.
The left over residue will grind out after you are finished.
Or if you have heaps of spare base material just start again.

To be honest dude I do it all by hand. I have some flap discs I fit to my 5 inch angle grinder and I do the whole job holding the grinder in one hand. I spent quite a bit of my time with a grinder in my hand cutting or shaping steel for work and it becomes quite normal to pick an angle and be able t...

hey Gav, the red board looks great! Regarding approach skis, We rode every approach ski - snowshoe variation we could think of for the decade before splits came out here in Utah in the mid 90s. If you are climbing and breaking trail in good snow they really make little sense. It is just too redunda...
