Ok back at this question. Ive been making my skis with a pretty large tip and tail spacers it works ok but they are pretty soft in flex vertical and horizontal even with 21 oz fibeglass. I have some un directional carbon and my plan is to use fiberglass in to the tip and tail spacers, and then on th...

They used a vinyl plotter to mirror cut the vinyl then applied to the backside of the top sheet. So when they top sheet is flipped over the image is forward facing. It's a good idea to be honest.

Very cool boards! One tip I would say is invest in a planner to profile your cores.

Thicker edges = thicker bases ?

Talked to cdw and they have thicker edges for sale. Thing is I have a roll of standard base material would a thicker edge work on that or does a thicker edge require a thicker base ?

I got so tired off lugging my heavy jigs from one side of my planer to the other that I tried a new simpler approach. I saw single board jigs being used in a ski factory or ski building video somewhere and was inspired to reverse engineer them. I bought a standard 8' 1"x10" pine board wit...

Re: Got my new planner

Hello guys, I am kind of having the same concerns about jigs. We got our new planner a few months ago, a really powerfull machine (check it out: http://www.casadasserras.com.br/plaina-desengrossadeira-larg-400-mm-baldan-cod-dgr-4-tr/p), but still trying to figure out the best way to work with it. I...

Yeah I guess it would have been fine. Ended up making a new one yesterday with teak for the base with a mdf top. I dont see the teak bowing any time soon.

Planer jig that last

I have made a 4-5 planer jigs in the last few years. They work just fine but they never last. They have been made with plywood, mfd, and maple and each one ends up getting bowed in the middle. Has anyone made one that works for a long time ?

Did you control the flatness or do they just look even? Depending on their machines and settings they can grind with very high pressure and just press everything uneven flat on the stone. Many (probably all major ones) ski companies do this in their factories. Pressure, Pressure Pressure. Lowers ma...

Most shops are not used to grinding skis with an unfinished base, of course it take longer/more passes than a pre-finished ski.You will need to do a bit of grinding to get them flat no matter what. I usually spend 30-45 min per pair. Also depending on how new their sanding belt is it could take lon...

Is your fibre layup symmetric? Same fibres below and above core? Yes using a 22oz glass above and below. I was thinking a little more about it, and I think the problem might be I'm not doing anything to the bases before I take them in. I'm leaving on the epoxy that was pushed through the gap on the...

Flat bases

After a basic clean up I take my skis to shops to have them work on the bases and edge. Each shop I have been to tells me that they had to spend a good amount of time grinding the skis in order to get them flat. I have been trying to improve my techniques to get a better ski, but still keep hearing ...
