Plastic sidewalls most definitely provide dampening, look at Ride's vid on slimewall tech. The most effective place for dampening materials is in torsion, not bending. Have a look at viscoelastic dampers on race skis. My final year project / thesis for my mech eng degree is on snowboard torsional vi...

Hey guys, I'm doing my final yr mech eng project on snowboards as well, I wonder if you'd mind sending me your reports? It would be a great help with my research! I'll return the favour and send my research in 8 months time when it is complete, it is based on torsional vibrations and stiffness in sn...

Annealing softens the material, not really desirable for ski/board edges, they plastically deform too easily and could have an adverse effect on hard usage (i.e. under board/ski flex, they bend and plastically deform instead of springing back). To harden them again you need to reheat them to the aus...

I beam deflection
I've done a very basic calculation on I beam deflection, for a 305 x 165 I beam at 40kg/m, with a 2m long cavity at 340kPa (50psi approx), simply supported using a uniform load. The deflection projected not including mass of beam is approximately 0.7mm. What does this translate to in real world term...
